Review: Barely There

Last year, I had the opportunity to attend a press preview of a new intimate line by Barely There. The cast of the reality show about a dress shop called Jersey Couture was in attendance to walk us through a mini presentation of the latest products, and we got to try out some of the products at home.

Some of my new favorites from this brand include Barely There Shapewear - in particular, the ribbed tank that is super flattering for the tummy (no one wants to work out at the gym with a saggy pouch look up front) and the Bandini CustomFlex Fit bras which are super light, supportive and can be layered for different looks.

Barely There is particularly great for everyday intimates - with breathable, light and supportive products. I'm not particularly comfortable with padded bras, so some of the padded products were not my thing, but there is something in this range of intimates for everyone.

Dream Sequins: Tell me about the inspiration behind your beautiful Spring 2012 collection!

BHON: For Spring 2012, we were inspired by Louise Bourgeois' incredible sculptures and two-tone drawings, particularly the famous maman spider, the woven child, and her insomnia drawings. Her work has the ability to appear both hard and fixed, while also portraying fluidity and emotion. For the collection, we knew from the outset that we wanted to incorporate a strong print that was reminiscent of this dynamic, so once we found the print, it helped drive the design of the entire group.

DS: Please fill us in about BHON- the label feels like it started out as a side project, but is really a labor of love.

BHON: Labor of love is a perfect description, and although it started as a side project, the intention was always to slowly place all of our eggs into this BHON basket. The idea was to create a label that designs clothing that we want to wear... Beside the creative desires, we have both always known that we wanted to work for ourselves, and wanted an avenue to take our own risks and make the decisions that we believed in. It's a very scary thing to be able to call all of your own shots, but so liberating and exciting at the same time. So, boil it down and ultimately, BHON is our baby and we grow with it every day.

DS: What materials did you use for Spring?

BHON: We used a lightweight silk as the main fabric of the collection, which lends a lightness and movement to our pieces, and also is a great medium for highlighting the details within our Tension print. In addition to the silk, we used a very lightweight modal jersey and a Japanese cupro to create the draped pieces in the collection, each draping and moving differently from the other. For some texture we used a crinkled mesh, and for structure, we used a Japanese cotton twill.

DS: Can you tell us a bit about how your creative and design process work?

BHON: Our process has varied each season so far, and even for Fall 2012, it was a very different process again. Sometimes, it starts with the inspiration and a few details.. Sometimes, we have key details and a print in mind initially, and work backwards to the inspiration for putting the rest of the collection together. Patty has the formal training in design and garment construction, but it is a collaborative effort on all levels. Usually we work from sketches and depending on the style, Patty will drape the preliminary muslins.

DS: This print you incorporated into Spring is amazing. How was it created?

BHON: We actually purchased the print from our favorite Brooklyn print studio, and reworked it until we were happy with the end result. We both have closets full of solid colors, and have never gravitated towards prints in our own shopping until recently. When we saw this print, we knew it was perfect graphically, and it fell into step with our inspiration and perhaps most importantly to us, it was a print that we would love to wear.

DS: Tell us about what you have in store for Fall 2012!

BHON: Color! And more detail! Even more beautiful japanese fabrics! Outerwear! We are still really trying to hone what our point of view is, and Fall 2012 feels even more true to ourselves and our aesthetic. We are really excited to show our next collection in February.

I'm craving a really rich, saturated red in my wardrobe these days, so when I saw this red cape from Ground Zero, I knew I had to buy it. In my first outfit post for 2012, I have paired it with my latest purchases: a black Theory dress, Raphael Young shoes and Celine Mini Luggage tote in souris (grey). More on the Celine bag in another post... It was definitely my splurge purchase for the New Year, and it's growing on me more and more each day.

I was a student at Berkeley when I discovered Etta James for the first time- I remember listening to her in my dorm room, wanting my adult life to really start. I was so impatient for everything then- my first real job, my first real love... Not knowing how precious a thing the heart is, and how quickly time would come to pass. And all of those things I had waited so impatiently for, would happen, and pass, without fanfare at all.

Thank you, Ms. Etta James, for bringing your dreamy music into the world. The soft, romantic core in all of us thank you for your lyricism, your beautiful voice. Rest in peace, Etta James.

Try as I might- the perfect black dress has always been just out of reach- something which can be worn during the day and then converted at night into a glamorous cocktail outfit (you know those things you read in magazines where they claim you can wear something day to night). Either the dress is too casual or too dressy to do the trick.

But I was stumbling around some websites and found this by chance- a High Low dress that's both slouchy and fitted at once. I can imagine myself wearing a jacket by day and then glamming it up with accessories at night. The price is right. So why not?

Here are five of my favorite things this week:

(1) The Artist - Run, don't walk, to see this charming black and white silent (yes you heard me right) film about 1920s/30s Hollywood. The costumes alone are worth the price of admission! This movie is sure to be the sleeper hit of the holidays. I floated out of the theater feeling very happy, and that's surely a rare habit these days.

(2) YogaWorks - I am currently testing out a week long pass to YogaWorks and have been committing myself to not only a regular practice in their Soho studio, but also picking up some interesting moves along the way at their barre class, BarWorks. I love the accessibility of the classes. And I don't feel judged, and the spaces are very clean. Love.

(3) CNBC reports that wealthy MEN not women in China are driving the luxury market there. Surprised? I know I am...

(4) Coach just launched a rather addictive Facebook app to "make your own animation" out of Coach tags. What an adorable idea!

(5) Foursquare is rolling out sharing buttons for publishers.

Thanksgiving may be over, but I have lots to be thankful about this year.

Over the past few days, I spent my birthday with my sister in Miami. Spa treatments and drinks poolside ensued at the Standard Spa Miami Beach, and we enjoyed beachside service at Soho Beach House later that weekend.

Then, it was back to New York en route to Boston for a few days of family time with the Mr. and many many slices of pie.

As we head into the holiday season, I'm thankful for my family, my friends, and my wonderful career, which continues to amaze and thrill me every day.

I'm also thankful for the little things that make my life more interesting. Thank you, Anthropologie for the quirky gift that made me smile during an especially difficult week- and thank you, Make Up For Ever for making Aqua Eyes waterproof eyeliner.

Hair Story

Lady Gaga devoted a whole song to it, there's a musical named in its honor... So what's with our relationship to our hair and why do we think hair really matters?

This weekend was all about hair for me- I got a straightening treatment done on my normally frizzy bob, and I caught the Vidal Sassoon movie via Netflix on Demand.... Which got me thinking about hair- why it matters and why we get so emotional about it.

One of my earliest traumatic hair memories happened in the fifth grade. My mother was obsessed with curling my hair and thought it would be a good time to experiment with my first permanent wave or "perm" shortly before our class portrait section. I think, in her mind, she was picturing Shirley Temple ringlets, but my hair was too thick and unruly for that style, and when I tried to brush out the super tightness of the rings post-treatment, to my horror, the volume of frizz around my head multiplied, seemingly overnight.

Picture me then, awkward personified, with pleated shorts, bright pink sweatshirts, plastic frame glasses and braces on my teeth. The hair situation only enhanced the awkwardness of the prolonged awkwardness of my tweendom.

For years, I have fought the natural fight or flight instinct of my tresses. I've indulged in permanent waves (more than once, despite my better judgment), Japanese straightening perms (or thermal reconditioning treatments), salon quality blowouts and DIY hair shapers such as curling and straightening irons. After ditching the super sleek look of my permanently straightened hair in the early '00s, I have returned to that look once again via a Japanese straight perm courtesy of a random Japanese salon I found in Chelsea under the careful guidance of Yoshi, my stylist with really keen intuition about my hair but limited English skills, which, in retrospect, could have turned out to be another hair disaster.

Why should hair matter so much to us? What does it say about our self-worth, our fragile sense of being? And why, for heaven's sake, can one person's mean, passing comment about that bundle of protein over our heads make us feel as if we have been mortally wounded; while one person's passive or casual comment about the chicness of our 'do can make us feel the very opposite- as if we have achieved something, that we are going places.

Officially obsessed with Advanced Style and not sure why I'm just NOW discovering the street style blog, dedicated to the art of women of uncertain advanced age with mad advanced style. The photo above reminds us how much more colorful and impressive these women are. Your eyes are drawn to Lynn Dell in her colorful collar and hat- not to the long haired conventionally beautiful women around her in LBDs and matching heels.

This all reminds me of first moving to New York and seeing Zelda Kaplan around town sporting her bright purples and prints, holding court in the corner of a party. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. And to this day, I aspire to be one of these women of advanced style.

Fashion Week + Carine's World

I've been a terrible blogger lately, but work has been all consuming. New York Fashion Week officially kicked off today, and I was busy with my head buried in an Excel spreadsheet. It's oh so not glamorous on the other side of Fashion Week sometimes! Sigh. What's on your calendar for Fashion Week this season? I have a feeling that I'll be immersed in work until I get some client events out of the way, then have some free time to spend at Lincoln Center and MADE.

Scenes from San Francisco

I apologize for the delay in posting. It's been a few days since I returned from a long weekend and then it was straight into New York Fashion Week planning at work!

I went away for a girls' weekend in San Francisco last weekend- and was fortunate to miss Hurricane Irene in New York! From what I gather, it was a non-event. Much ado about nothing. It was nice, however, to get away from the rush of the city, and to reconnect with the city on the Bay.

I had forgotten about all the hills in the city!

The cuisine was delightful- from simple Tex-Mex dishes to Asian fusion (I shared a few plates with Enid from Pinterest at Heaven's Dog- which I highly highly recommend).

The bar at the Clift (pictured above) is super romantic and surreal!

If you have a chance to go, please wait in line and eat at Brenda's- best French soul food I've ever tasted. The beignets were worth the 1.5 hour wait.

On my last day in the city, I randomly stumbled upon Cinta Salon, where I got one of the best haircuts and blowouts of my life. I am almost tempted to book another trip to San Francisco so that I can have a followup appointment with Kelli. Bay Area ladies- I highly recommend this salon!

But after looking at the Fall lookbook for the debut of their "UGG Collection," I am sorry I missed the Fall preview event in New York. The capsule collection was inspired by rustic Italy, with pieces handcrafted in Italy - very luxe indeed. I would have loved a closer look at the following items...

Caprera wedge lace-up booties in an array of textures and textiles (above). My personal favorite is the indigo version (center) in baby haircalf.

I love the inherent styling flexibility of many of the footwear styles. The Cavalieri motorcycle inspired boot (above), which comes with a detachable shaft, and can be worn in its ankle length incarnation.

Mini cross-body bags are certainly trendy, but there's something sleek and classic about these Catania Mini Messenger bags (above). I definitely have my eye on the Army green version in vachetta leather.

The Fiorentina wedge boot which can be worn multiple ways: full length, quarter or half cuffed (as shown above).

Last but not least, the Rosetta Messenger (above) comes in deliciously buttery looking vachetta leather.

Anthropologie Fall 2011: Color + Print

Last week, I dropped by the Anthropologie showroom for a Fall 2011 blogger preview. From the moment, I spotted tables of adorable candy and cake pops and walls lined with inspiration boards and textiles, I knew I was in for a treat.

This coming Fall, Anthropologie will be embracing color and print, with a nod to Japan.

In addition to viewing the pieces, we were given an opportunity to style ourselves in head to toe Fall. A fabulous stylist from Anthropologie helped me put together my bohemian ensemble below- which you can see is a departure from my usual minimalist grey palette. I had fun stepping out of my comfort zone that night and will definitely try to mix it up a bit more this coming season.

Fashion has a love affair, an unrequited crush on high concept or princess frou-frou (eg impractical) eveningwear that has no place in a working woman's closet. Over the years, my style has gradually learned to embrace more sophisticated silhouettes (jackets, separates, sleek fitted dresses) for work days and while Fashion with a capital F may overlook the subtle design achievements of the unsung heroes who cater to working women's wardrobes, I was glad to have a chance to visit the showroom of Lafayette 148, a womenswear label that specifically caters to that demographic.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from the Fall 2011 collection. For Fall, expect floaty double sided knit capes, fitted femme fatale dresses with leather detail and beautifully textured shawls and intricately embroidered accessories, all inspired by design director, Edward Wilkerson's trip to India. And as always, suiting with subtle design variations to kick your 9-5 ensemble up a notch: such as woven grosgrain ribbon or leather detail.

Of course I fell in love with the above crochet knit shawl immediately... A touch of avant-garde but the length and neutral color says: yes, you can take me from a high powered negotiation session to a fundraiser downtown.

Creatures of the Wind: 2011 CFDA Vogue Fund Finalist

Nearly two years ago today, I asked one of the founders of Stand Up Comedy in Portland about some up and coming designers on their radar. One of the names on her list was Creatures of the Wind (Fall 2011 pictured above). So I tracked down the dreamy designing duo from the Windy City and interviewed Shane and Chris for my blog.

Then a month or two later, I met the charming pair in person at their first presentation at New York Fashion Week. I knew they were something artsy and special, but I never knew how the fashion world would react to their uniqueness. Throughout the past few seasons, I have watched this label evolve almost literally from childlike naivete to ladylike elegance. So imagine my delight at seeing their names on the list of ten finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. Congratulations, Shane and Chris! Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the upcoming season...

Jean Paul Gaultier at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

On our recent trip to Montreal, the Mr. and I stopped by a fashion exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des Beaux-Arts) about Jean Paul Gaultier entitled: "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk." The show was nicely arranged into several themed rooms (as opposed to a straight chronological or linear retrospective approach) ranging from Boudoir to Punk Cancan. The exhibit was truly a multimedia experience- with projections onto mannequins and some rooms involving rotating catwalks.

Looking through these images, you can see how groundbreaking and avant-garde his designs still are today... Never afraid to walk the fine line between kitsch and couture, Gaultier's imagination is a gift to fashion. Pushing boundaries has been his calling card since the 1980s...

I really enjoyed this exhibit- and marveled at the original and ever prolific collections of Gaultier. If you have a chance to visit Montreal before October, please drop by to savor this wonderful show. It's worth a visit!

Dreamy Viktor & Rolf Shirtdress

Speaking of the Dutch design duo- anyone catch them in an episode of All on the Line with Joe Zee? There was something a little awkward about their portion of the show. That being said, I did quite enjoy their surreal appearance on the epi.

Vacationing in Vermont - Part One

The Mr. and I are currently taking a much needed week long break. The first half of our vacation took place over Fourth of July weekend in the Mad River Valley section of Vermont. It was not only our friend's destination wedding, but a chance for the Mr. and I to drive up through Burlington up to Montreal, where we are currently hanging out for the rest of the week.

Here are some photos from our stay in Vermont.

We highly recommend the B and B where we stayed for our happy days in Waitsfield, the Featherbed Inn. The property has some semi private cottages on a 20 acre estate. And the inn keepers fix a delicious meal, including the heavenly blueberry pancakes pictured above! The grounds are home to some adorable animals, including the alluring pony we spotted one morning.

For antique lovers, there were plenty of treasures to be found in the area, including this creepy looking doll. The working train set was part of the collection at the Madsonian Museum of Industrial Design.

While doing research on local designers, I fell in love with the unusual beauty of Denis Gagnon's Spring 2011 collection, especially those insane Aldo collaboration shoes! Apparently, the boutique is on sale right now, so I'm excited to peek some of these spring styles in person.

Memories of Memorial Day

We were last minute planners and so the Mr. and I spent our Memorial Day Weekend in the city. Despite our lack of preparation, we found ourselves loving the eerie calm over this holiday weekend. In non-touristy parts of town, New York can take on a small-town flavor, which I appreciate. Even the touristy parts can be enchanting, when seen through a different lens.

I was simply happy to be outdoors, walking and biking in glorious weather, with a few days away from the office...

As well as our odd colored frozen beverages (courtesy of Boat Basin Cafe)

And then, almost in spite of our last minute non-plan plans, we took a train about an hour and a half outside of the city to charming Beacon, New York, where we toured the Dia Beacon (a MUST see for anyone who appreciates large gallery spaces and contemporary art).

We were in awe of the scale of the pieces held at the Dia Beacon. In one of the pictures above, you can spot the Mr. doing what looks like a little tap-dance (lol).

And here I am trying on some punchy colors for the arrival of summer. What I wore: coral shirt from Urban Outfitters over a Theory dress, black and white batik print bag from Thailand, white hat from a street vendor, Chanel sunglasses and Bass loafers.

Let's not forget the coral nails: Tart Deco from Essie (my new favorite shade of orange!).

Falling Hard for Reed Krakoff

It's been a while since I made a major handbag purchase. So when I wandered into the Reed Krakoff boutique at Saks the other day, I didn't expect to fall so hard for the new label's glossy bags. Some of the bags, especially the slouchier styles, are like holding buttery slices of heaven in your hands.

Draft No. 17 by Jasmin Shokrian - Fall 2011

Can you believe that the above shots are of the same red twill circle dress by Jasmin Shokrian for her line, Draft No. 17? As far as I'm concerned- that shade is the perfect red I've been chasing in my dreams.

I had a chance to meet the lovely, Art Institute of Chicago educated designer in her LA studio last year, and connected with her design aesthetic right away- minimalist, avant-garde with a quivering emotional core (no wonder the First Lady is a fan).

It's so true what they say about women designers who work in this genre: they are kind to women's bodies, and will not forsake a flattering drape in the interest of executing an intellectual exercise. You can learn more about the designer here.

Oh How Pinteresting!

Those who know and love me well know that I have a bit of an addictive personality. I'll often crush on something for a brief albeit intense burst of time. And then it's on to the next, new thing! This hasn't been the case for me with a relatively new platform (still in beta!) Pinterest.

What I love about Pinterest, besides the platform's penchant for puns (haha- we share that in common, Pinterest and I) are the following things:

West Coast provenance

Pinterest is based in San Francisco, and that's ok with me. I love how earnest the founders and staff are- and that's coming from an ex-West Coast softie.

Simple, beautiful interface

Pinterest is a visual collaging tool in which users clip items from around the web and "pin" them to themed boards. The board above is my Spring inspiration board.

Ease of use

The platform enables a user to use a bookmarking tool called "Pin It" to clip and categorize items from various sites. Once an image is identified by the tool- the user need only add a description and assign the image to a Pinterest board.

"Pinners" are social

The small but passionate community will either repin an image from a board of yours or leave comments on a particularly good find. I've been able to discover some interesting community members this way. It's always fun to find a blogger friend who I'll converse with on Twitter, Instagram and now, Pinterest.

I'm feeling inspired these days.

I'm really enjoying the look of these mini cross-body bags from Kate Spade, a brand I hadn't considered in years. All of a sudden their saturated bright leather goods (see above bag in Citronella and Hot Pink on the site) are starting to feel a hell of a lot more relevant than I would have ever imagined.

Rodarte: States of Matter

When I was in LA recently, I had a chance to stop by the Pacific Design Center to check out a small but gorgeous exhibit of Rodarte for the Museum of Contemporary Art. The bi-level exhibit showcased more than 20 pieces from the brand's Spring 2010, Fall 2010 and Fall 2008 runway collections, including costumes from the film Black Swan. If you are in the LA area, this is definitely worth checking out. P.S. If these costumes are any indication, Natalie Portman's waist during filming was tiny!

Fashion on Film: Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy

I discovered a short documentary about designer Hubert de Givenchy and his life in fashion on Sundance Channel recently. Before I was a fan of Fashion, I knew the name from the elegant style of Audrey Hepburn on film, and many of her famous costumes involved his forward thinking designs. The one hour program consisted of sweeping stories with the still-dapper octagenarian (sitting down for lunch with Balenciaga)- gently reminding me of another time- when fashion was at a turning point, and dressing a woman in couture made with jersey was considered shocking.

To paraphrase Givenchy from the film: fashion is no longer about apparel, it is now about shoes and bags.

Whenever I start to feel disenchanted with fashion, I always find my way back. And sometimes a little detour into film or art is exactly the thing... This one is worth watching, if only for a digestible slice of fashion history.

NYFW Diaries: In a Nutshell

New York Fashion Week went by in a blur this season due to work. I was sad to miss so many great shows and parties, but I did make it to a few interesting things. Some highlights included catching the skaters and a special performance by Johnny Weir at Elise Overland, held on the ice rink at the Standard and catching up with friends at the IFB afterparty. Classically beautiful at first glance, and wickedly subversive upon closer inspection, Chris Habana's Fall/Winter '10 accessories fill me with inexplicable joy. I recently picked up a buzzsaw "rosary" necklace from Seven New York and it's one of those pieces I know will be in regular rotation this year. Habana, I'm making a habit of you- and with prices ranging from $80 for spike earrings to $295 for a penance collar, this is one of my more affordable addictions.

Scenes from one of the most relaxing weekends in recently memory:

Palm Springs for my baby sister's bachelorette party. We spent a day taking a tram up to the mountains, where we experienced a snow covered park (some of us were less than prepared for the snow- and wore our strappy sandals), then we returned for poolside drinks at the Viceroy Palm Springs, put a veil on the bride and hit the town, including an Old Hollywood haunt, Melvyn's, where a piano player serenaded our group with a cover of "White Wedding," and we hit the dancefloor. I made good use of my T by Alexander Wang dress that night.

The Year of More

I'm not really a New Year's resolutions kind of girl. But this year is a different. This New Year- 2011- will be all about the year of MORE for me.

(1) This year, I resolve to have MORE fun. To spend MORE time with the ones I love. The Mr. and I rang in the New Year with a few of our close friends at the Soho Grand Hotel. We also had a wonderful staycation in New York, snowstorm be damned...

(2) This year, I resolve to read MORE. To actually make it through the piles of magazines that litter our home...

(3) Instead of wearing the same handful of outfits each week, I resolve to wear different combinations, to have MORE fun with my wardrobe. Which hopefully, will result in MORE outfit posts for the blog...

(4) I'm going to be MORE organized this year. And that includes my bathroom beauty drawer.

(5) I say this ever year, but I'll say it again. MORE blog posts. MORE blog reading. And MORE time spent both online and offline with my wonderful blogger friends.

Girls Gone Wild: I Am Love and Black Swan

There are many reasons why I've been away from the blog for the past two weeks- I was in LA for Thanksgiving and Miami for Art Basel. Then, when I returned to chilly, snowy New York, I caught a cold. The real reason for my extended absence from blogging, however, has to do with a lack of inspiration. I was quite simply blocked. I felt I had nothing to say about fashion. Even the simple pleasure of dressing myself- and the way I felt when I opened my closet felt completely joyless.

Enter this weekend: when I was bogged down with a cold, bed-ridden, and armed with a Netflix account. On Saturday, I stumbled upon I Am Love. Then on Sunday afternoon, I went to see Black Swan with a few bloggers, including Jennine, Ann and Tanya. After seeing both movies, I had a little private a-ha moment. Something to write about! I had been meaning to see both movies for a while- and it was remarkable how many similarities their stories shared.

Both films trace the unsettling psychological transformation of two women with seemingly perfect lives. Over the course of the films, the viewer is invited into two privileged worlds- in I Am Love, a wealthy Milanese family with an old school villa that most of us could only dream of owning and in Black Swan, the competitive world of New York ballet. Both movies have surprising tragic twists which I will not spoil for you here. And both are beautifully filmed- and feature rich costumes (Fendi and Jil Sander for I Am Love and Rodarte in Black Swan).

In I Am Love, Tilda Swinton plays the wife of a wealthy Milanese business man who looks the part with her minimalist outfits and luxury handbags. But the real point of the story is that she is unhappy with her Vogue-worthy life and deep down, she feels trapped in her family's mausoleum-like mansion. What she really wants is to get real- and that means being out in the country with a lover, cooking and shod of ornamentation. Tilda Swinton is a talented actress, and let's face it- she owns the Raf for Jil Sander looks here- but she also owns wearing a bandana and chinos and cooking soup just as well... I Am Love is not a perfect film (there are just too many crazy plot twists and turns) but the coda is complex, and Tilda brings so much to the role that you want to dissect it over and over once the credits roll.

I had a similar initial lukewarm reaction to Black Swan upon leaving the theater this weekend... I questioned whether I had hyped the movie too much or whether I had read too many reviews to make it worth my while. As a ballet fan, I wanted there to be more actual dancing. My knee jerk reaction was that Darren Aronofsky, the director, was trying to express so many different ideas in one film, and it was all a little overwhelming at the end. Natalie Portman plays the ingenue who is cast as the lead in a new production of Swan Lake. Portman's character is a dancer who is so obsessed with perfection and her dance career that she can't see how effed up her supporting characters are: her controlling ballet mom played by the chilling Barbara Hershey, her creepy and inappropriate company director played by Vincent Cassel and her frenemy understudy played by the talented Mila Kunis.

The shots in Black Swan are suffocating and dizzying - in part due to the handheld, shaky camerawork which I remember from Aronofsky's breakout film, Requiem for a Dream. Portman does some good work here, even if I was totally hating on her character for being so tense and intense. This film nearly veers into camp territory- with its over the top drama and diva characters- but then, as if remembering that it is an "art film," it tiptoes en pointe back into art film mode- and that was the most frustrating part of the whole experience. It's a little bit of everything rolled into one film- a little bit of drama, horror, campy dance movie (c.f. Center Stage and Show Girls), sci-fi and All About Eve. I wish the director would have owned the camp thing a little more.

In conclusion, I didn't fall in love with both movies right away, but respected their cinematography styles and the overall "thesis" of both. Strong acting work by the leads. And any film with strong fashion wardrobes is worth seeing in my book.

Never Say Never

A little confession: I used to have a secret thing against Alexander Wang. I felt myself above the trendiness, the uber popularity of his "under" styled style. Some of my friends and I even had a pact not to purchase anything by the designer.

And yet, over Thanksgiving break, at a boutique in LA, there it was - stretchy and beautifully simple - a little ponte stretch tank dress from T by Alexander Wang, and it was on sale.

Never say never, my friends. Because this dress was a little gift to myself last week. Once I get over my newfound camera phobia, I'll show and tell. The Wang ban has been lifted.

It's my birthday today! Another year older, and hopefully wiser.

Last year on my birthday, I had a "virtual" tea party with some of my favorite blogging friends. The turnout was rather spectacular.

And while I hinted in my last post about some beautiful things I would like to add to my wardrobe, I've decided to take an anti-materialist stance for this year's birthday (it's just one day after all).

As fashion bloggers, we thrive on beauty, post and link to things we buy and wish we could buy. We buy things, and then we take beautifully composed photos of ourselves wearing said beautiful things. And all of this in the name of Fashion.

This year, I made a jump from a job that I hated, which paid me quite well. But to deal with the repressed dissatisfaction I had at my last job, I shopped. It provided me with some of the beautiful things I still treasure and wear today. But even after the extravagant purchases, and after the initial high of taking home my items, I still felt that emptiness within me.

Now, I have a job that I absolutely adore- and yes, I make less than I did before, so now when I shop, I often have to buy designer things on sale. But my life has never been happier, richer, fuller. Now I no longer have a need to gift myself, I want to give. It's a shift in my way of thinking.

Who are you? Were do you live?

I’m Roman. I just moved back to San Diego County—La Mesa, to be exact—after eight years in New York. I don’t think I would be as into fashion as I am now if I never lived there!

Tell us a little bit about Shades Spotting... Why shades?

To me, shades are the “it” piece. I think the culture surrounding shades—especially in hip-hop and street culture—is ready to take off. I like eyeglasses too, but sunglasses don’t have to necessarily hold prescription lenses, and this allows for more extreme designs.

I'm embarrassed to say that I only own two pairs of sunglasses. Just out of curiosity, how many pairs do you own?

I have twenty. This isn’t nearly enough! Collecting sunglasses has overtaken my vices for sneakers and watches. I probably buy a pair a month now.

Do you have a favorite pair currently in rotation?

I go to my Wayfarer 2140 in white or my Super Flat Top in red. I keep it simple unless the occasion calls for more of statement pair.

With collabs, eyewear designers truly partner with fashion designers to create their vision. It goes beyond licensing a brand to creating one-of-a-kind pieces that genuinely belong to seasonal collections. I’m rethinking the whole direction of my blog since I don’t live in a place like New York anymore. That said, I’ll snap crazy or unique shades—especially vintage—but it’s really about style. I’d definitely stop and take your photo, even though you have only two pairs!

I've always been a fan of progressive designers, and Six Scents Parfums has championed the work of these emerging fashion greats, by pairing them with the rockstars of the perfume world to create conceptual fragrances that push the boundaries of olfactory imagination. For Series Three, Alexis Mabille, Juun.J, Mary Katrantzou, N. Hoolywood, Ohne Titel and Rad Hourani worked with perfumers from Givaudan to create scents around childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. Here's a little taste of the collaborative process from the designers and perfumers themselves in the form of the documentary which accompanies the limited edition perfumes.

If I've been MIA from the blog for the past few days, it's because my agency has been doing work around this project's launch. I'm very proud to be part of such an amazing, creative collaboration.

Dream Hair

Been spending far too much time scouring the internet for hair inspiration these days... My hair stylist recently sent me an email wondering if I needed a trim. And over the next few weeks, my future style appeared to me in a dream collage.

What if... I wondered... we took one Ms. Katie Holmes when she got that blunt fringe bob (fringe, I want to marry you) and then paired it with a deep blue black color?

So I sent my stylist these photos. And I'm crossing my fingers for dreamy results.

Wish me luck on Saturday! I hope I don't end up looking too Manic Panic for the office! What are your weekend plans?
