Kane Versus Kane

My, Christopher Kane, is a busy young man these days- designing his signature, eponymous, London-based collection with sister, Tammy, and consulting for Donatella at Versus, which showed a vibrant collection in Milan. I'm dreaming of his technicolor brights for both collections, but definitely drawn to one collection over the other for Spring 2011...

Question of the Day:

Kane for Christopher Kane...

-or-

Kane for Versus?

Which do you prefer and why?

You Got the Memo, Boys

Proenza Schouler Spring 2011
all images via New York Magazine

A few years ago, when I was interviewing for a boring corporate job, and I needed a boring corporate suit, I decided to treat myself to a proper one from Barneys. After what felt like hours browsing the racks, considering the cool navy and black skirts that all felt somewhat too fashion-forward to do the job, I was ready to give up hope.

"Do you have something kinda plain, but not so old lady?" I asked the sales associate, who shook his head sadly.

"We don't really do suits right now," he explained, as I paused in front of a Balenciaga tulip skirt, looking for its "mate" on the rack.

Then, finally, in a lonely little corner, I found an unembellished black button down jacket and a nearly mini matching skirt. Jackpot! I thought to myself, as I peered at the label. Funny that it was Proenza Schouler. I didn't know they made suits.

Then I went into the dressing room, and tried on the jacket- which was a bit thrift-store boxy Jackie O, then the skirt, which was a size too small... I wanted something more slender overall- "More Dolce?" the sales associate offered, handing over a far too sexy stretch knit skirt and cardigan combo. I shrugged.

I considered buying the suit and using the in-house tailor to take it in. But something in me resisted. I grabbed the Balenciaga skirt, the one that didn't match anything at all instead. "You made the right choice," the sales associate whispered. "That suit was just not working for me."

And now years later... it all works for me. I'm craving Lady for Fall, and Proenza Schouler went ahead and did Lady for Spring 2011.

You got the memo, boys. I'm sold.

As Seen at New York Fashion Week

A few of my favorite things at New York Fashion Week....

(1) Dramatic backs at Risto - The silhouettes were simple- lean, minimalist; which made a perfect canvas for the subtle prints. I'm inspired by a conversation I had with Chrissy about photographing dramatic backs at Fashion Shows. You always see looks head-on, but often times, you miss the details unless you see it in person.

(2) The fierce young girl on the runway at Academy of Art, one of the runway shows I look forward to seeing at Fashion Week. You can really feel the love in student work, including the dramatic lace and heavily embellished underskirt in the second look below. Just beautiful.

(3) Nostalgic sleep-overs upstairs at the townhouse-set presentation for Rachel Antonoff. Including a basket of Cabbage Patch Kids (I miss Linda Marsha, the Cabbage Patch Kid of my youth- think she's still sitting in a toy basket in my parent's house.)

(4) The ethereal knits at the Tess Giberson presentation, which was held at 303 Gallery on an unusually bright day. Found objects and video were a delightful accompaniment to the clothes.

Bloggers Keeping it Real at Fashion Week

I apologize for the lack of posts over the past few days, but it was the first Fashion Week that I had to work my new job in addition to attending shows. More posts with New York Fashion Week coverage to follow!

Despite my patchy schedule, I had a chance to hang out with some pretty cool bloggers. Some of the most fun I had all week were at blogger meetups, dinners or intimate cocktail gatherings.

At Cafe Select in Soho, having brunch with Princess Poochie, Alyssa and Vyque, Jazzi, Jillian, LJ, Chrissy, Julia and Ann! {photo by Ann from Holier Than Now}

What I wore at brunch: Doo.Ri blouse, Eksempel trenchcoat, Wood Wood pants and Jeffrey Campbell wedges (these shoes were my standby companions at Fashion Week). We stood around for a little while after brunch and took outfit pictures of one another- which was kind of funny because it started to drizzle and we must have made a funny group- snapping each other like paparazzi. {photo by Ann}

The following evening, Ann and I met up with some bloggers for cocktails at the Royalton! {all photos at the Royalton starting with this one and below by Dan Moody}

Yuli, Julia and me!

I also really had fun chatting with Christina, Christina Ly and Liz! Despite the overwhelming rush of Fashion Week, it's nice to sit for a meal or drink and have real conversations with real people. Thank you, bloggers, for helping me keep Fashion Week real this season.
