Dreamy DC Weekend

The Mr. and I took a brief trip to Our Nation's Capitol, leaving by train from New York on Saturday morning, returning on Sunday afternoon. We had such a wonderful time, and it was nice to take a breather from our home in the concrete jungle... Here are some pictures from this past weekend...

After arriving in DC around noon, we checked into our wonderful room at the Park Hyatt, a few walking blocks from the Georgetown neighborhood. The room was spacious and I really loved the bathroom, with its walk-in closet and separate tub and shower areas. I would highly recommend this hotel! The concierge was very helpful and there was a tea lounge near the entrance where they were serving up an afternoon tea buffet upon arrival. Sadly, we had no time to waste on cakes, and headed straight to the boutiques (I had, of course, drawn up a list of must-sees in DC) after we dropped off our luggage in the room.

One of our first stops was Hu's Wear, an independent womenswear boutique which opened a few months ago. The boutique was hosting a sale on spring/summer items, and there were some labels which were new to me, but the pieces were a bit conservative for my taste. The sister boutique down the street, Hu's Shoes, had a few shoes that I lingered over, including some Givenchy wedges and Chie Mihara stacked heels, but I wanted to hold off until I saw a few more boutiques.

We walked a few more blocks down to Cady's Alley, a charming little side street full of design boutiques and Relish, a multilabel haven for avant-garde in DC. The boutique, which was bright and large, was hosting a great spring/summer sale, and I browsed the racks of Marni, Jil Sander and Japanese designers, including Junya Watanabe and Limi Feu, before trying on their entire stock of Limi Feu items. Shoes were stacked neatly in their boxes and many customers spent time lingering in the area. I wound up buying a Limi Feu black cotton dress with a zipper (which you can see later in this post).

After we checked out Relish, we hit a few more stores, including Barneys Co-op, which was having a great sale, and where we both scored some work-appropriate items, including a zippered navy APC dress for me, and a black button down Marc by Marc Jacobs shirt for him. We were surprised that the sales associates at Barneys Co-op outnumbered the customers, but then again, the weather that Saturday was gorgeous, so who could blame people for wanting to be outdoors enjoying the sun?

We stumbled into a local seafood joint for dinner called Tackle Box, which was a casual fresh seafood restaurant off M Street in Georgetown. Everything was made fresh to order, and I enjoyed my fish tacos very much!

Then, it was off to the Kennedy Center to enjoy a performance of
MacMillan's Manon by the Royal Ballet. What a wonderful treat! The ballerinas were amazing, and it was nice to take in the atmosphere at Kennedy Center, especially the amazing outdoor areas at intermission.

After the performance, we took a cab to the monuments so that we could take a moonlit stroll. If you have never visited DC before, I highly recommend an evening stroll by the monuments. There are tons of visitors hanging out in the area so it's a safe bet, and there's nothing more alluring than the glow of moonlight against the splendor of the building facades!

On Sunday morning, the Mr. and I finished off our trip with a farmer's market breakfast at Dupont Circle with a friend and a brief visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which was pretty brilliant and best of all, free!

So long, DC... until next time! We are contemplating another weekend getaway for the 4th of July, which is coming up this week. Anyone have any plans for the holiday yet?

Dossier Journal Style Blog: Douglas Reker

I had a wonderful trip to DC this weekend (pictures to come later this week)... I apologize for the lazy "hey check out this article I just wrote" posts, but I've been traveling and working on some projects, so this is another one of those posts.

So yeah--
check out this article I wrote for Dossier Journal's style blog about New York emerging designer Douglas Reker.

Reker is a talented textile designer by day, womenswear designer by night whose sophomore collection was just picked up by Barneys. The price points are moderate, and I have my eye on the pink lace-print dress (which, upon closer inspection reveals miniatures worked into the faux-lace). What do you think?

Weekend Link: RIP, Michael and Farrah

A sad week in celebrity news. First, news of Farrah Fawcett's death, then Michael Jackson.

May they rest in peace.

Such shocking news, but ever a gentle reminder of how lucky we are, to be alive, to have loved ones in our lives. I called my sister after news broke of Michael's death, and we reminisced about how entertwined our memories of childhood were with his early solo pop albums. I remember seeing posters for Thriller and Bad in the record store down the block. She remembers a lady doing a really awful moonwalk down the street carrying a Michael Jackson lunchbox.

We will all remember that single glove.

I'm inspired to create my life's version of Off the Wall, a defining moment in music history. If there was ever a time to do those things I promised to do; to say those things I promised to say, this is IT. No more excuses. Life is too short for ordinary things.

Off to Washington, DC for the weekend with the Mr. so just
a single link from the talented illustrator Danny Roberts, who just released his tribute drawing of the King of Pop (shown above). I was in the middle of compiling a Twitter-view for this week, but I have decided to postpone that as well until the following week.

Until Monday... be well.

Au Natural: threeASFOUR Spring 2009

People may still be buzzing with excitement over the icy genius of threeASFOUR's Fall 2009 collection, featuring Swarovski studded sheer pieces, including nylon leggings and amazing armpieces, but I took a second look at their pieces for Spring 2009 and they are breathtakingly beautiful.

I thought I would share them with you since they are very limited edition. While the label is generally available at stores such as Barneys, for this season, limited quantities were stocked at boutiques such as Colette and EVA. The Spring collection was inspired by shapes in nature, such as seashells and the swirled pattern created by a math concept known as the E8 system. Kind of nerdy, but beautiful, no?

P.S. My profile of the downtown designer collective was published in the most recent issue of Tokion- so please buy a copy and check it out for yourself! ;) It was definitely surreal interviewing the trio in their native habitat: a mirror-covered loft in Chinatown reminiscent of Warhol's Factory.

Girls Girls Girls!

Bottle Full of Veuve Cliquot at Tryst Nightclub in Las Vegas @ Dream Sequins

This past weekend, eight rambunctious girls hit the scene in Las Vegas. Most of us stayed at the Wynn, which we booked through Hotwire for a steal. It was my first time staying at the hotel, and while I was impressed by the lounge and pool areas, my room's decor left a little to be desired. Perhaps the suites are a little more impressive!

For dinner on Friday night, we had a multi-course dinner at a charming restaurant called Rosemary's off the strip. It has a cozy, anti-glitzy decor, which made us feel right at home, and I highly recommend their $55 prix fixe, three-course menu. After a few glasses of wine, I started to swoon when they played Arcade Fire's Funeral in the bar area. A nice change from the pumping techno they seem to favor in restaurants on the strip!

After dinner, we had a few drinks at Tao nightclub at the Venetian, which was overflowing with douchebags. I didn't really enjoy all the dancefloor groping and the swaying crowds who kept bumping into us at the bar- ew.

On Saturday, we hit the Canyon Ranch spa club at the Venetian, which was kind of a cattle call. My massage was just what the doctor ordered after a long evening. For dinner on our final night, we went to Lotus of Siam, another restaurant off the strip, where we had authentic Thai cuisine, wine from a Wine Spectator rated wine list and a flurry of dishes, with a bill of about $25 a piece. Highly recommended!

The club on our last night out was Tryst at the Wynn, which we loved due to its boutique size and the giant waterfall outside. We danced up a storm, and wound up playing a few hands of blackjack before calling it a night at 5 am. The blackjack tables at the Wynn, incidentally, was where
this strange incident happened where an inebriated couple asked if they could borrow my shoes. My shoes were my new beige/gold Emma Cook for Topshop platforms that you can see in these photos.

I didn't win any money, but I didn't lose any money either. Pretty decent for Las Vegas! And even though my friend A wound up buying a pair of hot gold Louboutins that weekend, I was good, despite falling for a pair of nude Sergio Rossi platforms at
Shoe In, a multilabel boutique at the Wynn. Sales were decent that weekend-- with many items on sale for 60% off!

Now that I have the weekend travel bug, the Mr. and I have planned a one night getaway to Washington, D.C. this coming weekend. Any suggestions for places to eat or shop?

Behind the Blog: SOS! Save Our Shoes

SOS! Save Our Shoes blog header @ Dream Sequins

SOS! Save Our Shoes is a charming fashion blog based in the UK (mostly in Cork, Ireland), though its two charismatic authors, LJ and Fi, often take their show on the road, spending some time in London and other parts of the globe this summer. If you haven't had a chance to explore their blog yet, I would suggest that you take a look! I loved their
impromptu interview with some of the contestants on reality TV show Make Me a Supermodel and this fairly recent coverage of Graduate Fashion Week. This is a personality driven fashion blog and I know that you too will fall in love, as I have, with their charming, chatty writing and their eclectic take on fashion. Read this snapshot interview to learn more...

Five Questions for My Favorite Bloggers

Who are you?

We are LJ & Fi, two girls who love each other, shoes, cupcakes, granny chic, and more shoes, in no particular order. Fate brought us together, and SOS! was the consequence.

Fi and LJ of the fashion blog SOS! Save Our Shoes @ Dream Sequins
Fi and LJ

Where are you?

We are behind a computer screenl whether it's in Cork, London, US, Kuwait, etc etc. We are citizens of the world, dah-ling, and damn proud of it!

What is the concept behind your blog?

Style. Fashion. Art. Creativity. We like to talk about what we wore, what we would like to wear, who we would like to wear, what we do, who we did, when we are going to do it next. But mostly, we just like to talk. And don't forget to SAVE THE SHOES.

When you are not blogging, what else do you enjoy doing?

We are dancing, musicing, gigging, fooding, reading, studying, laughing, roboting, makeuping, sleeping, spooning, hugging, kissing, shoesing, dressing, fondling, listening, tweeting, breathing... ALL AT THE SAME TIME. We multi task..ehem.

More importantly… what are you wearing? :)

Nothing but naked ambition...or pyjamas (to be honest).

Can We Borrow Your Shoes?

So I'm back from my girls' weekend trip to Las Vegas. And I'm going to full writeup about the trip at some point this week. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and am still catching up on sleep and work, but for now, I leave you with this anecdote from the casino floors at the Wynn:

Picture it: 3 am in the morning; my friends and I decide to check out a few table games after a night out. I walk away from the blackjack table to take a phone call. While I'm standing off to the side, an obviously inebriated couple approaches, pauses as if they want to ask a question, then taps me on the upper arm.

"Those shoes are hella fine, girl!" The guy says, holding his girl up.

"Thanks," I say.

"Yeahhh!" The girl slurs.

"Oh hey," the guy says. "How about this? Can we borrow your shoes?"

"Um," I respond. "No--"

Then as quickly as they materialized, the couple scurries away.

*** Sorry for the lame anecdote. I'll be back with some regular features and posts tomorrow. Hope you are enjoying the start of a good week!

TAG!: 20 Favorite Things

The lovely and amazing blogger Eden of Chic in the Tropics tagged me to do a list of 20 of my favorite things. So here they are!

  1. COLOR – Blue. You thought it was black, right? Due to all the black pieces in my wardrobe? I love blue because it’s the color of the ocean and I always gravitate towards blue pieces when I shop. It makes me happy.
  2. DESSERT – Cupcakes!
  3. SMELL – The smell of my Mr.’s cologne. It’s Comme des Garcons something. I think it’s actually a unisex perfume. No Old Spice for him.
  4. FLOWER – Orchids, which make me think of Hawaii.
  5. ANIMAL – Pandas! The Mr. and I have a major panda fetish.
  6. MONTH - November - My birthday. Anyone else a Scorpio? :D
  7. BEVERAGE - Champagne!
  8. SHOES - Kirkwoods, yes please!
  9. SNACK - Love love love dim sum
  10. SONG - Rocking out to Lykke Li "You're Good You're Gone"

    How cute are these pandas???

  11. BOOK – I’m embarrassed to say that it’s been a while since I read a really great novel, but I’m a big fan of Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Right now, I have a copy of Twilight and I’m not afraid to use it at the poolside in Vegas ;)
  12. FRUIT – Grapes. They’re perfect and portable.
  13. HAIRSTYLE – I am actually in love with the mod bob, which I had for a while. Now I’m wearing my hair long and yearning for shorter hair again.
  14. PIECE/S OF CLOTHING – One of my best pieces of clothing is a vintage YSL black cocktail dress that is made of silk crepe de chine and ties around the waist in a huge dramatic bow.
  15. STORES TO SHOP – I love the markets in Hong Kong (for cheap thrills), Seven for my Kirkwood and Preen fix, EVA for emerging designers, Eryn Brinie for floaty wannabe Rick Owens shirts and Uniqlo for jeans.
  16. SEASON – Fall. We never had much of this in California! I love being able to layer sweaters and wear boots and feel the crispness of morning air.

    Photobucket
    [
    source]
  17. HOBBY – Fiction writing, watching cinema with subtitles, catching opera and symphony performances and shopping when I travel.
  18. THINGS TO COLLECT – I started doing this cheesy thing when I travel: buying souvenir keychains from places I visited.
  19. MOVIE – I’m a sucker for the films of Woody Allen. I’ve seen nearly every movie he has ever made. I remember watching Manhattan in a cramped movie lab during college and thinking: This is where I want to be. This is how I want to live my life! Of course, I never thought about the implications and commentary about class and profession written into his story lines. Even Woody himself has said he writes almost exclusively about an upper middle class version of New York, a New York which does not exist for most people.
  20. RESTAURANT – I’m not a huge food snob. I tend to have very guttural, street-food level taste. I mean, pizza is a big part of my diet! My favorite haute level eating experience was in Paris about two years ago at a fancy pants lunch at Hotel Le Bristol, where they roll out the aperitif champagne cart to start.

Now I'd like to tag some of my favorite bloggers to list some of their favorite things:

Thanks for reading and enjoy your weekend! What will you be doing??

Behind the Blog: The Swelle Life

The Swelle Life blog header @ Dream Sequins
all images courtesy of The Swelle Life

Denise of
The Swelle Life is a Canadian fashion writer and blogger based in England whose heart, as she says, will always remain in Paris. Her blog covers a broad range of topics loosely related to fashion, especially emerging designers and I love reading it regularly for posts such as beautiful photo-essays about Paris, interviews with talented new designers and commentary about her own life, including a recent LOL-worthy trip to a hip hop dance class. She's not only a delightful writer, but an engaging member of the fashion blogosphere, and of course, on Twitter, too. Check out this "swelle" interview, and if you haven't had a chance to check out her blog, please skip over there right now!

Five Questions for My Favorite Bloggers

Who are you?

I'm every woman. No, wait - that's Chaka Khan. I'm Denise, a Canadian living in England with my family - a husband who doesn't really get fashion but fully supports my amours and a young daughter who is just awesome. When I began to choke on recycled office air and staff meetings made me want to climb on the table, rip off my clothes and swing from the fluorescent lights until guys came to take me away, I decided to leave my marketing job to do something that I actually enjoy - and wasn't trying to convince myself I enjoyed. So now I'm a freelance fashion writer trying to find time to keep up with my bag and accessories making, which I handfelt. And of course I write The Swelle Life!

Where are you?

I'm in the north east of England on the coast of the North Sea. It's really beautiful here with beaches and castles on cliffs, and the people are lovely. But mentally, I'm in Paris where we recently lived for a short time. And I'll always be a Canadian girl at heart.

Paris photographs courtesy of Denise from The Swelle Life @ Dream Sequins

Dreamy macarons in Paris courtesy of The Swelle Life @ Dream Sequins
above: beautiful photos of Paris (isn't she a wonderful photographer??)

What is the concept behind your blog?

Well, it's a concept that evolved as my interests became more focused. A blog is good for that, isn't it? You find that you'll begin to write only about what really excites you and leave everything else behind. So now it's all about fresh-thinking designers, vintage, Paris, the 1920s to the 1950s, art and beautiful images that convey a dreamy aesthetic. A romantic indulgence but not without a bit of goofiness; it is after all me writing it!

When you are not blogging, what else do you enjoy doing?

I'm an 'all or nothing' kind of person. I've either got not much to report on from my personal life or it's all big, like our time in Paris. The usual things include doing things with my family of course like taking advantage of the sunny days and going to the beach. I just really love simple things like going for a girls' lunch or take-away dinners in, and anything that makes me laugh is just huge to me, I need my 'me' time and I usually stay up late watching shows that make me shriek, like The Sarah Silverman Program which has me laughing so hard I usually wake up my husband. But it's okay, he gets back to his snoring without any trouble.

More importantly… what are you wearing? :)

Well, what I'm excited about in my wardrobe at the moment is a long-sleeved, white silk Cacharel dress with little turquoise and orange splotchy flowers all over it that I got in Paris, and an indigo leather jacket from Antwerp - it's just so cool and really comfy to wear. I wear dresses just about every day no matter what I'm doing (as long as they're easy); I love the anachronistic idea of dressing and behaving like a 'proper lady', which is ironic because as I write this on my laptop I've got one leg flung over the back of the couch and the other one dangling over the front, and my stomach is hanging out of my t-shirt which has somehow rolled up almost to my armpits. It's all about creating illusions, I guess!

Wishlist Wednesday: All That Glitters

This week's Wishlist Wednesday is all about glitter, baby!
I'm in the mood for it because my girls and I are heading off to Las Vegas on Friday for a weekend of mischief!

I still haven't made up my mind about what to pack...
but I'm definitely leaning towards something wackier than I would normally wear for a night out in New York...

How do you wear glitter?

I try to do a girls' weekend every year. Two years ago, it was Paris, and just last year, it was Las Vegas. This year, due to ease of travel (there are friends coming out from the West Coast) and budget constraints (we got a great rate at our luxe hotels), we decided to return to the scene of last year's crimes (shhh don't tell the husbands and boyfriends).

Any recommendations for eight rambunctious ladies in Vegas? The spa is booked. We're looking into restaurants, shopping and dancing spots.

Twitter-views: Ultimate Designers

For last week's Twitter-views, I asked some stylish Twitter friends about their ultimate favorite fashion designers. This evolved out of a conversation I had recently with talented designer Chrissy Rhee: If you could own season after season of one designer's clothing, which designer would it be and why? (In a way, the images accompanying this post are my own lazy way to "cover" the Resort collections. I'll leave the thorough dissection to other bloggers. Here's one thing I'd like to say about Resort: I would sell many pieces from my current wardrobe to own a piece of Christopher Kane's collection: it's the literal "bomb," yo.)

Here is what some stylish Twitter folks had to say about their ultimate designers...

@
stylesmith Marni! but without the fur items....(i just got asked something similar in an interview)

@
declinedesigns Vivienne Westwood. She is pure badassery in designer form. Probably McQueen if she wasn't available!

@
samcab For me, it would be anything Elbaz. I wouldn't care what house he was with. His pieces are on the cusp, yet timeless.

@
grrleigh OMG that is the hardest question ever. my off-the-cuff response is Jean-Paul Gaultier, b/c even his bad collections are great.

@
AbovetheFrayMag Church and State from Portland, OR. I love everything about their line and could definitely wear them forever.

@
hanako66 Chanel for sure! Dior is a close second...

@
Parmie Chanel, it had to be. They have pieces suitable for a party & a funeral, every occassion taken care of!

Black and white louche looks for Chanel Resort 2010 @ Dream Sequins

@
fashionherald My all-time favorite since I was a young wild one - Demeulemeester.

@
LaPetiteBlog I would have 2 go by the seasons -4 A/W It would have to be Mcqueen, FENDI Furs,JPG 4 S/S Dsquared2, A.Wang, Balmain ...hard 1

@
jennaviva I don't think I've ever been so attached to any particular designer, but I'd say Zac Posen. (Balmain for the season tho :))

@
fairykikka it's hard nobody has everything some are good for bags other for dresses I'd say Gucci since the latest collec are gorgeous!

@
inmode for me it has to be rodarte atm for their concepts and colours

@
roselwear Rodarte in combination with Missoni :)

@
Misslizzymarie Balenciaga! Xo

@
selahdor ok. ULTIMATE: Alber Elbaz for Lanvin

Slouchy dark sequinned jumpsuit and short white wedding dress for Lanvin Resort 2010 @ Drean Sequins

@
ourcitylight nanette lapore. i can live in her whimsy dresses and dream of them when i sleep.

@
SoloLisa 3-way tie between Chanel, Carlos Miele, & Oscar de la Renta: change slightly each season, consistent aesthetic.

@
KayleeKaye BCBG MazAzria!

@
juicyincouture for me it would have to be Roberto Cavalli !

@
craftyasparagus Def. @M641: feminine & unique, but not kitschy.

@
sassisam Australian designers, Sass & Bide :-)

@
TheSwelleLife Great question! One is definitely Erdem - feminine, romantic, amazing prints time after time yet always fresh!

Dreamy navy printed dress and separates from Erdem Resort 2010
above: Erdem Resort 2010

@
maryjanefrances thats really hard for me to answer, unless this was 1974. if it was, I'd say Halston, hands down!

@
SaveOurShoes just 1 designer!! GASP,tough one. Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Rodarte, Chanel, Galliano would be options tho!

@
amandalee Bottega Veneta or Trovata! [also, in a completely different life, Built by Wendy.]

@
kimair lanvin all the way...he clearly loves to dress women...

@
chicagostyle I choose Balenciaga! Perfect balance of edgy and classic, bonus? The shoes and bags. My life would be complete.

@

After a few days of deliberation, I choose Alexander McQueen and as an alternate, Yohji Yamamoto - for my fashion archives, darling! I think I would be happy to fling open my closet and see those pieces peering back at me. Every now and then for kicks, I would invite all my best friends and frenemies to come over for drinks and we'd play dress up with the archives.

And you? Who would you choose?
