Vintage DIY: Frumpy to Funky

I’ve often thought the frumpier the vintage dress, the funkier its potential.
I see it as a challenge, of sorts.
I see it as a challenge, of sorts.

Take this little ditty, which I bet looks just like the outfits your Great Aunt Ethel wore on Sundays.

Shorten the hem, undo a few buttons, wear it with boots that would make Ethel lose her lunch, et voila.

You’ve funked the frumpiness right out of the dress.
Thanks, Kelsey! Keep it simple-- that's my kind of DIY. :) Ladies and gentlemen, you need to visit her stylish blog right away if you haven't taken a peek yet: http://the-anthology.com.
**Readers: I have a week of vacation left in Thailand, but that doesn't mean the guest posts stop here. Check out the full schedule of guest posts on the left sidebar. Tomorrow, look for an inspired personal style post from the lovely Sterling Style. Happy weekend and thanks for reading!**

Great DIY post! I love the simplicity of it. Less is more, right?
Kelsey does have great style. Hello shhbooties! (yes I've somehow given your shoes their own entity now haha)
i love the shoes!!!
this is so cool!
xoxo
Love this DIY!!!
The red blazer really give the dress some "pop" and those boots, well - TDF!! Love them!
And you darling D, seem to be having an amazing time on your trip. So happy to hear you are getting in some luscious treatments and at a STEAL too - lucky you chickie!!
XOXO
So so amazing. Kelsey-- you're so cute with those shhbooties :)
Thanks so much for your comments, guys :)
Ahh, Kelsey really does know how to spice up a vintage piece. I've always been jealous of her finds. But the hemming is such a great idea. Now all I need is to find the perfect dress to modify...
Hope you're having a great time by the way! I forgot to mention that you should try out the Thai street kitchens. I know some of them might look dodgy, but they're cheap, good and about as authentic as Thai food can get (just watch the spices). I even had mussels at one of them and was convinced I'd probably die of food poisoning, but I never had any problems!
wow...very impressing! and i never i would say that but the open toes boots look amazing!
This is one of the best DIYs I've seen! Thank you!
aww what a great post ! i love to read the writing and see the photos :D have a nice weekend !
Awesome. I want these boots in my closet too. :)
this is so great-I love the images-very cinematic xx
Great transformation :) I wouldn't think of taking the hem up on things...makes a huge difference!
i love those shoes! fantastic.
Love Ur shoes!
X♡X♡
I love it! and HAVE FUN darling ^.^
kisses
I love how she made over that dress. The result is fabulous. It makes me want that dress now!
I want to know how you did the hemming. I am not sure whether I own a needle even, so if we don't have a sewing machine, can we still do the hemming? It's hard to find dresses like these though, a lot more people are getting smarter and snatching them from the thrift stores. Blah!
I love the house. And D, am sorry for confusing her house with yours lol
Great job with the dress! Looks good.
That's great.
I always think those "frumpy dresses" have so much potential and sometimes people just can't see it.
Even just adding a different belt can make all the difference!
Fabulous post! DYING over those gorg boots!
Ooh great DIY! It takes a good eye to see the potential in a thrifted dress and Kelsey has it.
I hope you're having a fantastic time in Thailand, Dream Sequins!
What a great guest post. Love this outfit and those boots are amazing!
Hope you're having a great vacation (duh, I'm sure you are), D!
Absolutely adore it! Particularly the shoes. I need to have you over to raid my closet!
i love kelsey's magical transformations!
Ok, I need this post! I love how much work is put into it!
hope you're having a fantastic trip! I LOVE this post. One of my favorite things to do is find hidden treasures in thrift stores and give them an updated look :)
OHHHHH loved the shoes, the blazer is amazing. Definitely checking her out ASAP!
kelsey darlin' you never look frumpy, rest assure! but love whatyou did to that dress.
D - hope you're having a blast in thailand. i have a special place in my heart for that country seeing that i lived there for nearly 3 years when i was a kid.
awesome guest posts!
I have a long dress that I just shortened. Hoping it doesn't look as frumpy. I may even go shorter ;)
You are a genius. A genius, a genius, a genius! I can't believe that short frock was once that frumpy vintage dress. Love the new look - as well as the way you styled it! :)
Now that's one way to obliterate the frump! Great job taking on a challenge! ♥
This is so clever! Love, love, love it! Wish I could do the same...
I thought the dress looked fine as it was. I am seeing way too many hemmed dresses lately. Hemming on vintage should be done very selectively. Right now short dresses are trendy but it won't be long before longer lengths are back in. Knee length is classic I would have left it alone.
Thanks for all the lovely comments, mes amis!
And thanks again for having me, D!
