The Best Weekend Ever

Monday, June 1, 2009

I hope you will excuse this detour from a "fashion" post to bring you my weekend in pictures. In lieu of regular blog or designer interviews this week, I will sharing a new "outfit" style post and a somewhat serious essay about an issue that's been on my mind (related to fashion but not entirely about fashion).

A gentle reminder: if you haven't already entered my 100th post giveaway, the deadline to enter is this Friday June 5th. You're awesome and I want you to win stuff, ok?

On Saturday, the Mr. and I headed to the Red Hook ballfields aboard the Ikea ferry (a free boat ride from lower Manhattan). It was a pleasant day for a boat ride, and the ballfields, where we were meeting friends to sample authentic Latin food, were a few blocks away from the Ikea landing site. We happily sampled pupusas, grilled corn, fresh fruit juices and plaintain. Heaven! Nearby, in the actual "ballfields," people were engaging in some intense soccer games. Although a short ride away from Manhattan, it felt like a vacation in a quaint little town. After we stuffed ourselves, we took a tour of some open artist studios in the area, taking a detour through some side streets to a small stand that specializes in the most sublime key lime pie on earth.

On Sunday, the Mr. and I met a friend for dimsum in Chinatown, then we took an unexpected detour through shops in Soho/East Village, stopping to admire the baby-soft leather of the bags at Zero Maria Cornejo and the silky, semi-sheer jersey dresses at EVA. I fell hard for a summer white strapless Stylein dress; simple but flattering. It was hard to walk away without purchasing something I loved at first sight... but the sheerness of the material merits further thought about foundational garments.

Then, as we walked up to the edge of the Village, we paused to admire the new patio of the Cooper Square Hotel, which has become the center of recent controversy: residents say that the new outdoor space, which was very zen to us as we sat sipping mojitos on cushy white patio furniture, creates unbearable noise for those who live near the newly constructed hotel.

It feels like summer...

I'm glad you had such a wonderful weekend! It really helps to get away from the city (and the computer!) sometimes. I'm back in Paris and we've had a long weekend (today off as well), so thankfully it's been sunny and we could get out a bit. I do find an urban environment to be quite overwhelming after a while, even if I grew up in one.

By the way, I tried to get to the b-store in London, but always failed to go up Savile Row. I promise to review it, when I go back to London in July. I did go to one market, but only snapped 3 pix, so I'll cover that next month as well.

And I promise I will finally get back to that email you wrote me ages ago ;-)

Suzanne: Thanks for the comment! It was such a lovely weekend. Obviously, I could have done more writing and blogging, but it was well worth the tradeoff...

wreckedstellar: Dim sum is my absolute FAVORITE. :D

nookie: The grilled corn is so amazing. And authentic, too. The line was just insane, though.

Liv: Awww... love the Carroll Gardens area. It's so pretty there. Red Hook would be an amazing place to live. So many artists and inspirational places.

Lily G: Yes, the corn is definitely my new fav. I would trek to Brooklyn for corn :D

stylewithbenefits: I was feeling a little glum, and happy to check out new places this weekend!

WendyB: The friend we took to the hotel on Sunday was not a big fan of mojitos either, but the drink was made of a pretty tart fresh squeezed lime juice... so not overly sweet!

fashion herald: It was my first time... and not the last :)

Couture Carrie: It was just an amazing time... Summer is here, yay!

DaisyChain: Mayo, cheese and chile powder = amaaaazing

HauteShopper: Thanks for your comments! Yeah, it was nice to step away from the computer for a weekend and just live, you know?

jennine: My sentiments, exactly!

Liz: You should come back here and frolic in the summer! The weather is divine. :D
