The New Black

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

As a personal style challenge to myself, and to show my sister, a film student in Los Angeles with an enviable sense of personal style, that I can do it, I will be purging my outfits of my "fashion crutch" color-- black for one week, starting tomorrow, April 1st. I think I can do it. But am a bit fearful about what to do for hosiery. Any suggestions?

What are some of your "fashion crutches" - colors, items or styles you simply can't live without?

Wish me luck!

Photos to come.

I suggest cheating a little- charcoal or navy blue stockings :) Or maybe nude fishnets?

Najeema: Thanks for the tips! Nude fishnets-- those sound HOT! Unfortunately, it's still chilly these days, so this is going to be a REAL challenge. Grey stockings might have to do the trick :)

RE: Hosiery, I would go bright fun colors in lieu of black - patterned or opaque pink, turquoise, yellow, which of course look great paired with...black...but so do neutrals—gray, khaki, etc.

Good luck with that! The more years I've lived in NY the more colour has been purged from my formally vibrant wardrobe.

I would suggest navy [my favorite colour, shocking? haha] or perhaps find some printed hosiery? Urban outfitters field trip? haha. I've been trying to be less dramatic and dark but throwing on some hot pink nail polish. But not that obnoxious radio active looking stuff.

In response to your comment, I'm so over seeing that obnoxious red bottom. It used to be so good but now it's just like wearing head to toe Juicy Couture [or really any Juicy] But sadly consumers love it and that's what Saks needs, to give the people want they want to actually buy.

The SoHo Jil Sander doesn't even have a real window display, so it couldn't fulfill my previous Jil Sander madison windows :'(

I rely too much on black too. I've improved and generally wear it just in the day and not for evenings out!

Blackburn: I think I will go out and treat myself to some fun patterned stockings to spruce up a navy outfit or the grey dress I'm planning to wear soon... Thanks for the tip!

Modelizer: I have to say that I wasn't impressed with the in-store selection of stockings at Urban Outfitters. They show so well on the website, though.

WendyB: I realized I had a problem when I couldn't find anything not-black to wear to my friend's wedding in SF this weekend. Sigh. Note to self: punchy cocktail dress shopping trip!

Ooh, yay, good luck with this.

My fashion crutches? During the week - jeans (because I work from home). Also pajamas, because sometimes I'm too lazy to even put on jeans.

I used to have the same problem (a wardrobe filled with black clothes), also with shoes. But back then I wasn't really into fashion and quite lazy with regard to what to wear each day. One day I just started getting into it, and with that I also suddenly got bored with black. I still love it, but only wear it head-to-toe if I've worn color for 5 days in a row.

If you want to cheat a bit, I love grays and they go very well with pinks and blues. Dark blue is easy, as are dark purple and dark greens. I also love wine red and in summer tend to go for a darker turquoise or not-too-bright magenta. What i'll never wear are yellows and orange, and the brown/beige colorway isn't my thing. Good luck!

I mostly wear black during winter but I love to pair my black clothes with bright color as purple or teal tights, multicolored scarves and tons of jwelery. I can live without skirts or dresses I'm obsessed ;-)

(I'd love to swap our ipods!!)

K: You're lucky to be able to work at home in your jammies. I would love that. Sigh.

Haute-Shopper: Thanks for the color tips! I'm wearing a grey dress and some inky blue tights with silvery shoes. Maybe too much in the grey family today. But I'm breaking out! Might drop by Topshop today to pick up something bright to wear tomorrow...

Carlotta: I kind of feel like what I'm doing is color rehab and when I emerge from this, I will be able to mix more color into the wardrobe. Slowly but surely :)

Wow I'm the same, in black head to toe most days! Good luck with this, can't wait to see your looks

Sarah: Oh I'm excited to share some preliminary results of my style experiment with you. Day 3 so far and it's been good, although I have something akin to withdrawal when I see New Yorkers in their black!

My first fashion crutch has got to be jeans. I keep buying them looking for the perfect fit. Another other fashion crutch is the black sweater. And recently to dress up the jeans and black sweater, I've been wearing lots of different colored scarves.

Cath: I love my jeans- can't get enough of them. Actually, that's the first thing I turned to for the weekend (unfortunately we can't wear jeans at work)...
